Plastered Reed

One of the outcomes from a research called
“Reading Reeds”, which looks into the design potential of locally harvested reeds, an abundant, sustainable material in Sweden.

A sculptural piece where contemporary and ancient materials within the architectural context meet. With the background of reeds as roof material, plaster board off-cuts from the construction industry were mashed into a pulp then mixed with grated off-cut reed material and paper pulp for its binding cellulose. When mixed, a kind of reed plaster terrazzo texture emerged, which was re-moulded as a surface top to a column of reeds. The reeds are held together with the help of some web clamps and natural biodegradable glue.
